Kendall Auto/ Toyota Grant

Kendall Auto Group of Fairbanks has given a $10,000 grant to Catholic Schools of Fairbanks for it's new Academic Center. This grant was matched through the Toyota Dealer Match Program for an additional $10,000 grant to CSF. The Academic Center will be a transformation of the current library to one that is more technology based and ben...eficial to all CSF students in all grade levels. Pictured are Nancy Hanson, Director of Schools; John and Vikki Hill of Kendall Auto Group; and Caroline Allen, Marketing Manager for Kendall Auto Alaska.

John and Vikki Hill have been generous donors to the Catholic Schools of Fairbanks for many years, including funding a new gym floor in Boileau Hall. The Hills were HIPOW chair-persons in 1997 and 1998 and are still active participants today.

Caroline Allen is a graduate of Monroe Catholic High School, class of 1999. She has found time to come back and help out her alma mater with the Catholic Ladies Guild’s “Fling Into Spring” scholarship fundraiser.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Catholic Ladies "Fling Into Spring" Dinner and Scholarship fundraiser on Thursday the 28th of April. Over 180 people were in attendance at the Wedgewood Resort. It was also a special evening to bid farewell to Joanne Sexton, who will be retiring from her position at Monroe as High School Secretary. Even though she will not be working at the school any longer, she will still remain across the street. She has been with the schools for 20 years and will be missed. Totals for this fundraiser are not available at the present time.

Another big thank you to all those card players who came to the 3rd Annual Monroe Athletic Department Texas Hold 'Em Tournament on Friday the 29th of April. Over 65 players filled the Antler Room at the Fairbanks Elks Lodge. There were lots of great door prizes throughout the evening. Jim Sullivan, Class of '68 walked away with the Poker Chip Trophy. Congratulations Sully! Totals for this fundraiser are not available at the present time.

For much of the year, Sandy Jamieson is a working guide and pilot in the wildest parts of Northern Alaska.

During the dark winter, he retreats to his log studio to work as an artist and illustrator.

Accurate and lively paintings of wildlife, bush flying and other Far North pursuits are seasoned with wry humor. His images go beyond pretty pictures, penetrating the lines to a territory where art “has some hair on it."

His work provokes thought, and often a laugh. But it consistently shows respect and affection for the rough- edged people and animals who have been his fellow travelers in the Alaskan bush for over thirty years.

When not exploring around in their Cessna 170 floatplane, Sandy and his wife Melody are likely to be found at their home near Ester, Alaska. They have two grown children, Ben and Abigail, who live in Fairbanks.

The Monroe Foundation office is open year round to accept HIPOW items and monetary donations. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm during the summer. (When the schools are back in session, we will open at 8am.)

Hearts for Haiti

Hearts for Haiti – A Spaghetti feed will be held on Sunday, February 14 (Valentine’s Day) 4:30 -7:00 to benefit the victims of the Haitian earthquake. The event has been organized by Junior Ross Brouillard and students of Monroe. The cost will be $7/plate or $20 for a family and will be held in the commons. The meal will include spaghetti, roll, salad, drink and dessert.
All proceeds will be forwarded to the victims in Haiti through Catholic Relief Services.

I tracked down Ross Brouillard on Wednesday afternoon at Spenard Builders Supply, where he works every day after school stocking shelves.
I already knew that he is a busy 17-year-old with a lot on his mind, but I wanted to talk to the Monroe High School student about the relief effort he has organized this weekend to help people in Haiti.
I asked him how he got the idea.
“It was the Thursday after the earthquake. I thought that my school hasn’t done anything to help anybody else throughout the world,” he said. “I figured it would be good to do something bigger.”
He ran the idea by Chris Stepovich and other teachers, school staff, his parents and members of his Boy Scout troop. It seems that just about everybody liked it and offered to help.
The “Hearts for Haiti” spaghetti feed is set for Sunday from 4:30-7 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Monroe High School. All proceeds will go to Catholic Relief Services.
The student councils are donating desserts, while the Monroe staff is doing salads. Student teachers are donating most of the spaghetti and sauce, and members of Boy Scout Troop 38 are going to help serve, he said.
Ross, the 17-year-old son of Paul and Tricia Brouillard, is active in school sports and has nearly completed the requirements to become an Eagle Scout.
All he needs now is for people to come by Monroe on Sunday afternoon. The cost is $7 for a plate or $20 for a family.

Happy New Year from the Monroe Foundation and the Catholic Schools of Fairbanks! We hope that everyone enjoyed the Holidays and spending time with family and friends. Here in the school gym, many friends and Alumni of the CSF gethered for the MCHS Alumni Basketball Tournament which turned out to be a big success.

Also over the holidays, the Monroe Athletic Department hosted it's first annual Mt.McKinley Holiday Classic on the campus. Monroe welcomed teams from all over the state of Alaska including Anchorage, Juneau, Skagway, Haines and Fairbanks. The tournament was very exciting. The following is from the Fairbanks Daily News Miner and was posted on 12-31-09:

"Monroe prevails

The host Rams captured their first win of the season and also secured second place in their own tournament after rallying for a 50-46 victory over the Haines Glacier Bears in the last game of the Mt. McKinley Classic.

Monroe (1-4 overall) ended the tournament with a 1-2 record, the same finish for Haines and Thunder Mountain. The Rams, though, earned second place based on a tiebreaker of fewest points allowed."

MCHS donates over 3 & 1/4 ton of food to Food Bank

MCHS students rally together to donate over 6400lbs of canned food and dry goods to Fairbanks Food Bank, this school has been doing this for many years.
On November 24, the Junior and Senior High Schools participated in RAMS day (Random Acts of Mercy and Service) and were spread out to numerous non-profits all over Fairbanks. Students baked pies for the annual Thanksgiving Dinner hosted by Immaculate Conception Church, packed food boxes at the Fairbanks Food Bank, hosted the Grandparents Luncheon just to name a few of the service opportunities that went on that day. Immaculate Conception School held a service day of its own called the Day of Caring. Pre-K through 6th grade held work shops throughout the day making soup for the Food Bank, creating dog and cat beds for the FNSB Animal Shelter and making blankets just to name a few. What a wondrous world we live in!

MCHS Alumni Holiday Basketball/Cheerleading Extravaganza

This year the old and tired pre-1995 Alums will play in their own bracket, while the young and reckless more recent grads will oppose the current Rams in a basketball fracas at the Monroe Gym Saturday, December 26, 4-8p.m. There will be both men’s and women’s games. Teams will be coached by former Rams players. Referees will embrace a “flexible” approach to the rules to favor the infirm. Special rules such as “Fast breaks will be conducted at walking speed” and “No one under 40 years of age allowed in the paint” will, however, be strictly enforced. Quarters will last until the oldest player on the floor runs out of breath. A defibrillator was recently installed near the gym in anticipation of this event. Cheerleaders from all eras will perform during breaks in the action, which promise to be frequent. Snacks will be available and cameras are welcome.

Wow, what an amazing event we had here at the schools. For three days, people came from all over Fairbanks and the entire state to support the Catholic Schools of Fairbanks. At the end of Saturday night, we had raised over $604,000!! An all time record!

On Thursday the silent auction tables for all three days were ready to accept bids, whereas the oral outcry items were kept on the stage. Attendees of the auction were able to bid on items for all three nights which could be anything and everything from fuel to winter gear to homemade jam. On Friday night, all of the tables that closed on the night before were removed and only the items for Friday and Saturday remained. After the close of auction Friday and everyone had gone, the gym transformed into a dining hall for 600 dinner guests who attended the Black-Tie Gala on Saturday night.

Preparations began at 5am, with all of the tables and chairs arranged and set up in a way to accommodate so many guests. The table set-up committee then arrived to place table cloths, napkins and set each place setting with fine china. Meanwhile in the kitchen, crews were preparing for the dinner, desserts, snack trays and then the late night ice cream treat.

The doors opened on Saturday night at 5:30pm for a social hour and then dinner was served. The oral outcry auction began and the night was full of excitement. Bidders can bid on many unique items like trips, furs, gold and cars, all of which are generously donated from individuals and businesses in the Fairbanks community. At one certain point during the evening, the auctioneers conduct the Fund-An-Item. In years past, funds raised were designated to certain projects like a new gym floor, playground equipment and technology. This year, all funds went to the general operating budget. During this portion of the auction, bidders can make their tax-deductible cash donations. In a matter of 20 minutes, the 2009 Fund-An-Item had $5000, $2500, $1000, $500, $250 and $100 bidders a raised a total of $110,000. Thanks to Buzz Otis for providing his rendition of "King of the Road" by Roger Miller.

Volunteers put in hundreds of hours to ready the auction and students from the Catholic Schools of Fairbanks were involved as well. The Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade classes donated themed baskets filled with items generously donated from parents. The high school students actively participate in set-up, take down and volunteer lunches.

The HIPOW auction is possible due to donations from generous individuals and businesses in the Fairbanks community and all over the country. The business community has been especially generous to HIPOW. More than 65% of the auction donations come from area businesses through cash gifts, sponsorships and catalogue ads.

I am truly amazed at the magnitude of this event and even more blessed to be able to be in the midst of it all. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

Auction Tomorrow Night!

We have been doing all of our last minute preparations for the auction which is tomorrow beginning at 5:30pm. We offer secure child care for kids over the age of 3 and concessions are available for sale in the Commons. We have so many wonderful items up for bid, there is sure to be something for everyone, including the kids. This year we have "Fish Bowl" drawings on Thursday and Friday nights. We call it this because we use fish bowls to drop your tickets in. Tickets are $1 each and you can enter as many times as you like for as many different items you like. So, if you would like to have a chance at being the winning ticket for the iPod Touch and you have purchased 20 tickets, you can either put one ticket in the fish bowl or all 20 for greater odds. You are able to enter the Friday drawings on Thursday, at the end of each day, the winners will be drawn. You do not need to be present to win. As of now we have 24 items in the Fish Bowl Drawings:

We have just received an "Ice Road Truckers Trip" with Carlile Transportation who made national television fame with the cable tv series "Ice Road Truckers". This trip is for one person departing from Fairbanks, Alaska and traveling up the Dalton Highway 500 miles to Prudoe Bay. Good morning, so the auction will now start to come to life here in the gymnasium of the Catholic Schools of Fairbanks. The ceilings wires were hung with care last night to be able to support the ceiling decorations which will be hung by Mrs. Marie Metz and her crew tonight. Mrs. Metz and her 5th grade class have spent hours measuring and cutting rolls and rolls of colored sheeting which hang "swag style" above the auction floor. The gym floor will be protected lots and lots of tarp and taped down to prevent tripping.

Big Barn Auto Design has been very generous in donating a $299 certificate towards a One-Way Remote Start and one set of 240 Blitz Driving Lights also valued at $299. Also in the automotive department we have a 2007 Ford Taurus from Airport Equipment Rentals and a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse.
Looking for travel? Doyon Ltd. has donated some Kantishna Wilderness Trails full day excursions, 4 for June and 4 for September. All of these excursions include 95 miles of scenic wildlife habitat, en route refreshments, lunch served at the Kantishna Roadhouse and an afternoon interpretive program or dog sled demonstration.

Tomorrow morning a team of volunteers will be here by 6 am to start setting up all of the tables in the gym.

So, the days creep closer and the excitement is building. We are introducing some changes to the auction this year.
On Thursday and Friday Family nights, we are opening a Buy It Now Room, where it is exactly that. You have the opportunity between 5:30pm and 7:30pm to purchase items with no bidding wars. These items will be of good quality and priced to sell. The items for Thursday night will be different from those on Friday night. Make sure you come and check it out.
Also this year, auction goers old and young alike will be able to try their hand with the fish bowl drawings. One can purchase a ticket and drop it in the fish bowl in front of the item they desire in hopes of being the lucky ticket drawn. These will be open from 5:30pm until after the last table is closed. These fish bowls will be located in the gym and will be replacing the Silent Saturday tables along the far back wall opposite the stage. The items on Thursday will be different from those on Friday. The winner need not be present to win.

Hello and welcome to the HIPOW blog page! My name is Amanda L. Blanchard and I am the Advancement Coordinator for the Catholic Schools of Fairbanks and the Monroe Foundation, Inc. in Fairbanks, Alaska. As Advancement Coordinator, I am in charge of major fundraising for the schools, which is made up Immaculate Conception School (Pre K-6th grades) and Monroe Catholic Junior-Senior High School (7th-12th grades). The Monroe Foundation, Inc is the financial arm of the schools and we have been given the task of raising $1 million + this year to keep a balanced operating budget. We will raise that $1 million through our Annual Appeal and through our HIPOW auction.
HIPOW stands for Happiness Is Paying Our Way and is a three day auction that is held every October. In 1970, Fr. Francis W. McGuigan, S.J. and an army of volunteers hosted the first HIPOW auction and since then it has become the premier fund-raiser, a tradition and a fantastic event in Fairbanks. In 2008, more than 2500 items were up for silent and oral auction and $540,000 was raised. All money raised directly benefits the students of CSF.
HIPOW has made it possible for parents to have an academically challenging, faith filled option for the education of their children. We are grateful to donors (individuals and business) and the many volunteers who have been nurturing the Catholic Schools of Fairbanks since 1946 and supporting HIPOW throughout the years.
The HIPOW Auction this year is October 8,9 & 10, 2009. Please join us on our Family Nights (8th & 9th) free admission , doors open at 5:30pm and auction begins at 7pm. On Sat. the 10th is our Black-Tie dinner at 6:30pm with auction starting at 7:30pm, $125 per plate.
